1915 Circus Girl Costume

This is the first costume I completed for the play The Elephants Graveyard, which I am costuming. It takes place in 1916 and is about a group of circus performers.
This first costume is for the circus girl who rides the elephant.
1915 Circus Girl

My Inspirations were these old photos below of circus girls from the era. Those short dresses must have been considered quite risque in the 1910's when women's skirts reached the ankles still.:

I made my outfit from some fabric I found at the FIDM Scholarship in downtown LA for a dollar a yard. Upon examining it more closely I realized it was silk charmeuse! I almost put it aside for something else that isn't a costume, but decided to use it after all because I feel it gives the costume a more authentic feel. Synthetic fabrics didn't yet exist in 1916.
Besides, I am hoping to impress the director so I can get more of these period pieces which I love doing!
This dress was draped on my dress form and then fitted to the actress who has the same measurements as Isabelle, my lovely model and daughter.
I wanted the feel of a bustle with the tulle peeking through  so I pulled up the skirt and stitched it.

I wanted a gold hook and eye closure to match the gold trim on the dress but couldn't find any so I painted some white hook and eye tape with gold craft paint.

I was lucky to find the tulle in the same color as the silk at the scholarship store as well. This dress was very inexpensive to make.
The headpiece is made from pretty feathers but I didn't get them in the shot and didn't notice until now. I hate when that happens!

The gloves were bought in a bridal/ quinceanera shop. These types of gloves are worn by girls when they have their Quinceaneras, a traditional coming of age celebration some hispanic girls have when they turn 15.

The actress will be wearing tights and ballet pointe shoes. I wish I had had some for these photos!

Sew & Tell Saturday June 9, 2012

Welcome to Sew & Tell Saturday!
I hope everyone has had a nice week! We had a busy and fun one.
It finally feels like summer around here!
We went to Disneyland and had a blast there as usual. I am like a big kid when it comes to that place. They renovated a couple of my old favorites like Small World and Pirates of The Caribbean. It was fun to see Disneyland through my youngest child's eyes. She was so amazed when she got to meet Minnie Mouse!
Today we went to the beach and it was gorgeous. Those of you who come to California and go swimming in the ocean are often surprised about how cold the water from the Pacific Ocean is here. But on a hot day it's very invigorating to jump in the ocean.
We also had some company, a children's book illustrator I met at the Craftcation conference and her three children were camping nearby so they came by for a barbecue and to check out the old homestead. Our kids had a lot of fun playing outside!
As you can probably guess, I haven't gotten much sewing done and time is ticking away for the opening of the play I am costuming and I still have several costumes to make! This weekend the old sewing machine will be whirring away.
I had a guest post over at Project Run & Play this week, and have two more coming up at Melly Sews next week and Family Ever After next month. Guest posting is a little nerve wracking because you are trying to put your best foot forward and are terrified to do a really lame post on someone's blog who was nice enough to invite you to post!
Here are some featured posts from last week!
Sew In Harmony took her little girls to Disney World this week and made these darling Minnie Mouse style  dresses for them to wear!
They are so cute with the Converse sneakers to match!

If you are really ambitious The Red Headed Mommy  explains in detail how she designed and created this gorgeous, boned bodiced Steampunk dress in a tutorial. It's worth a look to see all the work that goes into making a dress this detailed.

On the crafty side Charlotte Sew Far So Good has an easy little tutorial to make these cute scissors covers.
Post your sewing and crafty projects !

French Mariniere T shirt tutorial

If you didn't make it over to Project Run & Play to see the tutorials going on for the Flickr Friends Month go and take a look!
I posted my French Mariniere Hand painted dress tutorial below on Monday and am now sharing it here too.
My tutorial  for the French Mariniere t- shirt dress.

This dress was a part of my signature look for the Project Run and play Flick pool:
This is a very simple dress to make.

I have had a love affair for the Mariniere tee for years now and it seems I am not he only one. I have some good company!
Coco Chanel.

Pablo Picasso.

Bridgitte Bardot.

Are you convinced yet that this is a great look and that you need one too?
Although the Mariniere is easy to find outside of France for adults, finding them for children is very difficult so I decided to make one for Gigi.
Here are the directions for the tutorial:
Materials needed:
An adult white t shirt from the hobby shop
marine blue fabric paint
a small paintbrush
wooden or sailor type anchor buttons
a sewing machine

Bon Jour mes amis!

Lisette "Sailor Pant" Simplicity 2245, Gigi's Birthday

I have gained 8 pounds the last few months and I am now 7 pounds over my "I'd better get myself to the gym before things get out of hand" weight .

None of the dresses I have sewn myself fit right anymore. Yikes!

That's the thing about sewing for myself. I make everything so fitted that if I gain just a little weight all my darts and pleats and fit get thrown off. Sure there are seam allowances that I could let out but I don't want to go there!

A friend has put me on an eating plan. Although I have been working out, the truth is you can work out all you want but if you aren't eating well it is so easy to consume that 700 calories you just worked off. I call it toddler mom syndrome. You just have a few bites of your kids Happy Meal and next thing you know you have eaten 3/4 of it!

Hopefully I can get things together soon and get back in my dresses with my new eating plan. In the meanwhile I sewed up this top and pants.
The pants are by Lisette and are available from Simplicity 2245. I got it at Joann during their 99 cent Simplicity sale. They reminded me of the Colette Clover pattern which I wanted to try so I bought the pattern. I did end up making this pattern about two sizes smaller than the size recommended for my measurements,14. So keep that in mind before you try this pattern. These pants should be easy to take in.
I love the little button tabs on the pants. They go with my nautical theme this season. That's my "thin" pose. Just cross your leg over the other and hold your tummy in!

The top was self drafted and very quick to make. I did make the waistband a little too tight because I was rushing through it.

If you don't want to sew for yourself because you aren't at the weight you want to be I would recommend you do it anyway. If you keep your garments unlined they aren't that difficult to take in. You could also make knit fabric items which withstand weight fluctuations. The mood lift you will get from making yourself something cute is so worth the work of altering the garment later.
Pencil skirts, simple straight pants and simple sheath type dresses are all pretty straightforward to alter.

In" lighter" news we celebrated Gigi's third birthday on Sunday! We had a simple cake party in the afternoon attended by my dad, my stepmom, my father in law, my mom, the kids, and our favorite next door neighbor. After having a party with 70 people last week for Oliver's graduation, I needed to keep things low key. Gigi had a great time opening her presents and eating her cake!

Contemplating her birthday cake!
Gigi with my mom and her big brother Oliver, and the birthday banner behind.
I got out the old homemade Happy Birthday Banner and hung it up in the backyard.

Old fashioned fun.

Sew & Tell Saturday June 2, 2012

Welcome to Sew & Tell Saturday!

You are probably wondering if you landed at the wrong page since my blog design has changed ! Things around here were getting pretty cluttered and when it got to the point where I was getting confused by my own layout I decide to call in some big guns to help me.

I worked with Jacquelinne from Smitten Blog Designs for about two weeks on the new design . I was worried that if I hired a professional designer that the blog wouldn't look like "me" anymore, but Jacquelinne actually helped me keep my style but made things way more organized.

My blog was starting to look like my back room where I throw everything! And my car. Those of you who drive kids around all day will know how disastrous our cars can get...

Today I started a Flickr group for sewists who like to sew vintage patterns for kids. If you have ever made anything from kids vintage patterns I hope you will join my Flickr Sewing Vintage Patterns For Kids Group! I have had a hard time finding people who share my hobby of hoarding sewing vintage patterns for their kids, and I am looking forward to meeting other wierdos sewists who share my passion!

And while I have you here as a captive audience, you might as well stop by my Indygo Junction Pattern Giveaway, open until Tuesday! I will be giving away a new, donated Indygo Junction sewing pattern every week. I won a lifetime supply in the Vintage Modern Sewing Challenge. Well, maybe not a lifetime, but quite a few which I am sharing with you!
This weeks giveaway pattern.

So onto our featured projects from last week.

This fringe wiggle skirt from Elisalex at Stitch Me Softly is a real showstopper! And can I please have those green shoes ?

This butterfly jumper made by Jess at A Couple Of Craft Addicts is just lovely. Such attention to detail. I love the polka dots peeking out from the eyelet skirt.

I love this colorful version of the Emmaline bag pattern sewn by Veronica at Sew Very. I am hoping to sew this pattern too, as soon as my theatre costuming job winds down.
